Take the dog out, before you go to bed, whether he is sleeping peacefully or not.
Failure to do so results in a whining dog in the middle of the night and a late night trip outdoors!
Can you tell that I had a rough night? I was first awoken by Kristyn who was coughing so hard that she was close to being sick. I got up to give her Buckley’s but that didn’t help. I ended up giving her a teaspoon of flavored brandy. She was able to sleep after that. But I wasn’t.
Doc was roused by our moving around (or we were roused by his whining, not sure which) and he would not settle. So I got up and threw on a housecoat and boots and took him outside. We tie him with his leash to his spot by the piano. It’s like kennelling, I guess. This way he’s not wandering around and we don’t find puddles and piles in the morning.
After my late night walk in the yard, I tied him back up and went back to bed, only to have him continue to whine! I got thinking about the evening. I was on my own during the childrens’ bedtime. Bedtime took so long! I started before 6pm with baths and NO ONE was sleeping when J got home at 10:00pm. It was one of THOSE nights! Jason had worked a long shift – 5AM to 9:30PM. He was tired and hungry and I had waited to eat with him (the kids had mac and cheese). So Doc kinda got forgotten.
We tie Doc at night, as I stated earlier and also during meals and when he seems to be in the way at particularly busy times of the day for us. I realized that he had been tied for most of the afternoon / evening. I thought he might be hungry. I got back out of bed and moved his food and water to beside his bed, because I was not going to be staying up while he ate. Jason had another early morning, so when his alarm went off and he was getting ready to go he asked what went on the night because he felt as if he had no sleep. Even though he didn’t get up with the issues, his sleep was quite disturbed with me in and out of bed so many times.
So, anyway, the moral of the story is to take the dog out for a pee before I go to bed, even if he is sleeping peacefully! Everyone gets more sleep. And I’m all about getting as much sleep as I can.
Striving to learn and live God's purposes,
