About two years ago, before my older girls were reading Bob Books were suggested to me as a starting place for teaching reading. They said that these short, simple and little books were perfect for little hands and short attention spans. I went out on a limb and purchased book sets one through four.
I agree 100%. Book set five was purchased the next spring.
All of my children so far have enjoyed learning to read with Bob Books. And those who can’t read enjoy being read to while the others practice.
The two newest boxes are sight word stories – one for kindergarten and one for grade one. I have a struggling reader, who is growing in leaps and bounds and I believe that helping a younger sister with the Bob books has helped her too! My 5 year old is kindergarten age and she is working with the Sight Words Kindergarten box. Her favorite book is titled The Jet. It’s really cute.
We follow the suggestion card in the box and keep the sessions to their attention span. Marrissa (5) reads no more than 5 little books in a sitting right now. Kristyn (8) will read a whole box. Although we haven’t used the flash cards very much I really appreciated the suggestion to sit beside your child rather than across from her. I believe that a love of learning is not only fostered by great material, but by closeness with the instructor.
Today I had Kristyn come to me and say that she wanted to make her own Bob Book story using the characters she’s been reading and learning about from the Bob Books. I think this is a great testament to the great things found in these little boxes.
Furthermore, these boxes are great for throwing in the diaper bag, or keeping in the bus to read while on a short trip (long for the kids) to the city (2 hours) or even a quick trip running errands while we are waiting for this or that. I love that they are compact and yet sturdy.
I love to hear my children say, “I read the whole book!” And they actually say that on a regular basis.
