Glasses are personal. In the past, glasses were functional; if they helped people see then all was well. Today, glasses are trendy, part of our fashion statement, and have become synonymous with cool.
Women naturally want glasses that make them look great. They want glasses that fit their faces just right, glasses that help them stand out in a crowd, glasses that show everyone their unique personality. Many women choose to have more than one pair of glasses so that they can match several outfits yet still have some funky frames. Some people do not even need glasses but buy them anyway because they are so fashionable in today’s world.
How Do I Choose the Best Frames for Me?
But how do you choose the best pair of frames for yourself? First of all, make sure that you do the choosing; not your husband, boyfriend, significant other, or anyone else. You are the one that is going to go out in public with the chosen glasses, after all, so make sure that you love them. Moms, dads, grandmas, and second-uncles-on-our-father’s-side are probably not the best judges of glasses either. They mean well but still think of you as a seven-year-old and are going to go for the Kid’s Eyeglasses. Either go alone or take your best friend. (Make sure that your best friend thinks of you as her best friend, too.)
If you already have glasses then all you have to do is look for three numbers on the inside of the frame. These measurements (lens diameter, bridge, and temple) will be your guide. Keep in mind that the measurements are not set in stone; as long as you stay near that number you should be good. For example, if the first number is 50, then you can look for frames with a lens diameter of 48-52. Bridge should be within 1mm and temple can be within 5mm. Glasses can also be purchased as small, medium, or large.
What Shape is My Face?
We have all read about face shapes in relation to makeup, hair styles, and earrings. These face shapes can also help you choose glasses that flatter your face. Determine whether your face is round, oval, square, oblong, heart, diamond, or triangle. If you cannot tell what your faces shape, ask that best friend (remember—absolutely no asking that second-uncle). Once you know your face shape you can get tips at a variety of sites online and recommendations on which frames are best for you.
The Yin and Yang of Frames; or Balance and Harmony in Frames.
You want to choose frames that will emphasize your best features while down-playing features you do not like. Full-rim frames will emphasize great eyes (or great eye makeup), semi-rimless frames will emphasize the top half of your face, and rimless frames give you that “barely there” look if you do not want your face emphasized either way. Remember to choose the right size as well because the wrong size can make you look like an owl, a granny (no offense to the granny’s out there), or weird (unless, of course, the weird look works for you in which case, go for it).
Getting Down to the Nitty-Gritty (or the Fun Part of Choosing Frames).
Choosing the color and style of your frames is where your personality can really shine. Are you modern? Classic? Are you a Fall or a Summer? Bolds or pastels? Clunky or graceful? Don’t know? Give it some thought, look around at the styles and check out your wardrobe. And remember, what matters is you; get the frames that make you happy.

Thanks for the tips. I always hate getting new glasses and have pretty much stuck with the same basic style for the last 20 years. Maybe it's time to update! :-)
