Our cats got mail the other day! My children thought it was the funniest thing. The box was addressed to Tweety and Franklin. On the way home from the post office they were telling everyone we met, “Our cats got mail!” (I’ll tell what was in the box in a little bit.)
We normally feed our cats Whiskas – the purple bag. It’s expensive, but less so than Iams. I really don’t like buying cat food. And the fact that I spend so much on their food that I could be putting toward something for my children really bothers me. So just in the last month or so I switched to <gasp> store brand cat food. MY cats HATED it! They only ate it because that’s all that was available to them, besides the children’s scraps from meals. And they chose the meal scraps over the cat food!
So, back to the package from the post office addressed to our dear pets. Cat food samples. I was able to review three different kinds of food and asked to share which food our cats preferred. So, I just happened to be out of cat food at the time the box arrived. We started right away with the samples. The three samples were “Aromatic Attraction” (purple), “Savour Sensation'” (pink) and “Protein Preference”(gold). We received 3 cute tin bowls for each cat. Each bowl was a different color that corresponded with one of the three different food samples.
Our cats are indoor-outdoor cats so I just put the food out when Tweety came in and watched to see which he would choose. Tweety choose the purple one almost immediately. He would stop occasionally to sniff and sample one of the other two bowls but always came back to the purple bowl. His second choice was the Savour Sensation (pink). I refilled the bowls and watched the second cat, Franklin, eat. His choices were the same as Tweety’s. The Aromatic Attraction was the first bowl emptied each time we served the Royal Canin Selective cat food types over the next couple of days.
Something I learned in the information included in the package I received was that each individual cat has his / her own personal preference. There are innate “tastes” that come from just being a cat. Secondly there are acquired tastes that come from what their mother ate while lactating and such things. Lastly, cats preferences are also based on their current environment. There was a cool little diagram in the pamphlet that was also color coded like the bowls were. According to this diagram, our cats chose their food mostly in the “acquired” preferences rather than leaning toward their environment or innate tendencies. When we first brought our cats home as kittens we served them Whiskas. I have since gone back to Whiskas. It is what they are used to and Royal Canin is not available in our local stores; I will have to pick some up when I go to the city. This was a neat little experiment and review!
