Mom-iversity – Sabbath Study – Week 3

“Don’t let the DAY become more important than the INTENT.” from A Walk With The Lord.

By INTENT, I do not have a Sabbath in my week.  I know that needs to change.  I need to live intentionally, and not by accident.  A lot of my day to day activities are random and “accidental”.  I’ve been working at changing that over  the last year or so.  And I believe that my hunt for what a Sabbath truly is has stemmed from that desire to be more intentional.

In the Bible and today, a Sabbath is a day for not working.  I don’t work outside the home but I certainly work a lot!  So, what would my Sabbath look like?  I would choose to cook very little.  I would not do laundry.  I would do the very basics.  In order to pull this off, I will have to be very intentional and productive through out the rest of the week.

Another thing I keep hearing and reading, but haven’t seen the verses for is: Don’t do the ordinary things.  Well what would be ordinary for me to do day to day?  Computer stuff.  I would have to give up my computer time and replace it with something.  What would I replace that time with on “a day of rest in the Lord?” (another phrase I keep hearing.)  Bible stuff, reading, prayer, singing.  Family time.  Nature walk (until it gets really cold), time at the park.

Is the Sabbath a day to do things we enjoy doing?  I haven’t come to a complete decision on this yet.  I think we should do things that we enjoy doing on the Sabbath.  To me, that would be restful, and renewing and would certainly put me in a better frame of mind to worship my Savior and Lord.

Slowly, my Sabbath is developing.

Mom-iversity - Sabbath Study - Week 2

I guess I should be happy to report that I didn’t learn a lot that I didn’t already know.  I read a lot of scripture in regard to Sabbath.  There is still so much in the Bible about it.  What I read sits well with me and the way I am currently living my life.  So far I am convinced that we need to have regular weekly sabbaths in our lives.  To do so is a command.  Does the weekly sabbath have to be on Saturday?  I am not convinced that it does.  I believe that God has a lot of grace for His children.  There are a lot of things that He would prefer that we do this way or that way, but He allows us a little wiggle room so to speak.  I think sabbath could be one of those things.

While He may prefer we rest on this day or that day, it is not a salvation issue.  However, I believe that if we do things His way, the blessings are great for our lives.  Do I want all the blessings that would / could come my way?  You bet I do.  I’m just not there yet.  Maybe I’m just not ready to take that leap.  Maybe I’m just not confident enough in the education I’ve been getting /giving myself.

I’m taking my time and I’m learning what I can, when I can.  It’s slow going sometimes.  I wish I had days on end to just sit and read and study and learn.  But the reality of the matter is that I’m a wife and a mother first.  And a scholar (if you will) some where down the line of priorities.  I know the purpose of Momiversity is to get us a bit more educated on our topic of choice and I’m so glad that I’ve chosen this topic.  I will continue to study and learn and dig.

In my digging I have learned a few things on side trails, not specifically related to weekly sabbaths.  I’ve learned about Constantine and his creation of his Christian nation.  I’ve learned how he labeled the holidays of his gods with Christian labels so that we are celebrating our special days on the same days has pagan gods.  I learned that as Christians we can’t count to three (Jesus’ time spent in the grave).  I am disappointed that we let Constantine do these things.  I don’t know what this knowledge means for me and for my family, but knowledge is power.  I like being educated and having knowledge.

This coming week I will be digging more into Scripture and some blogs about sabbath.  I’m just not sure where I will be starting.

So there you have a few updates and highlights from my Mom-iversity course.

Mom-iversity - Sabbath Study - Week 1

Welcome to Week One of Mom-iversity.

My chosen course of study (that will last longer than the four week course at Inspired To Action) is to learn about the weekly Sabbath and any other tangents that may take me on.  I have selected scriptures mentioning sabbath and relating to sabbath that I want to dive and dig into more.  Also I searched for blogs and websites that discuss the topic.  I will be looking into those deeper as well.  Lastly, I am listening to / watching The Jonah Code videos on YouTube.

So far, I’ve gotten off on a tangent in regards to Jesus’ death and resurrection.  We celebrate His death on Good Friday and His resurrection on Easter Sunday.  I do not understand why.  In the Bible, Jesus said He would be in the grave 3 nights and 3 days (Matt. 12:40).  Friday evening to Sunday morning is not 3 days and 3 nights. Some people may think I’m splitting hairs or choking on a gnat or whatever, but where I am in my relationship with my God I need to dig a little deeper, get some answers and really find out and know some things.

In relation to a weekly sabbath, a friend told me that I won’t really know until I experience, and put such a thing in place in my life.  I’m not there yet, partly because I don't really know what a sabbath rest is supposed to look like.  Finding out that is part of my mission during Mom-iversity.
