Maximize Your Mornings Challenge

I need to get up before the kids; this is going to be hard, especially with a new baby.  It may be too high of an expectation, but I think life with a new baby will flow better if I make an effort.  I am joining in this challenge.

I have been getting up around 7:30 to 8 and going to bed between 10 and midnight.  I plan to go to bed around the same time but get up just a little earlier this week at 7AM.  By the end of the month I hope to be getting up regularly at 6:30 and trying for earlier in the coming months.  Even getting up this early, I will probably have my two youngest getting up with me.  I will have to occupy them.  Not sure how yet, because I’m really bad about turning off the TV once it goes on.  I can put R in her exersaucer and W can probably play Legos or something at the table.

My biggest obstacles in the morning will be keeping the momentum going.  The computer (email and facebook) suck my time.  I plan to stay away from the computer (specifically those two items, as we us the computer for school) until after lunch.  My other momentum stealer is me sitting at the computer for meals.  The children sit at the table while my husband and I sit in the living room (me at the computer and he at the TV.  We claim it is downtime during the day, but for me it becomes draining time because it drains the momentum from the day.

I want my mornings to move right into the MOTH schedule we have laid out.  The children and I have been working so much better when we are on schedule and everyone knows what is happening when.  They get to do the fun things they want to do and I get the chores done that I need to have done.  It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN situation.  (I threw the third win in for DH, because he’s happier too!)

Thanks for your reply about the Canadian meme.

As one who has experimented with maximizing my time by reducing my sleep, my only advice is, "Don't!"

We need sleep, especially when we are pregnant. It's God's way of refreshing our bodies ("He gives His beloved sleep," Ps 127 or 128)

As a mom, you need to sleep until you are finished. The only result of less sleep is a tiny bit more done, and a lot more sin (in my case: impatience, grumpiness, anger, ungratefulness, lack of trust).

If you wish to get up earlier, go to bed earlier, or get a nap in the middle of the day. I think MOTH talks about naps and about training children so mom can sleep.

I know I'm sounding opinionated, but I'm just coming out of a two year acute chronic fatigue state. I was maximizing my time and exhausting myself when I got into it. I've done miniversions of the reduced sleep thing a few times in my life, and the results were never pretty.

Blessings,

Annie Kate

Thank you very much for your advice and personal experience! I really appreciate it! I have not really changed anything, except to put more definition to it. This morning I was up around 7 and my 2yog was up within 15 minutes. I went to bed around 11 last night.

I can't reduce sleep at this time. I need every little bit I get and have taken to napping occasionally when my 2yo does. I have my husband home a lot so it works out well, but I do need to train the kids so that I can sleep during the day. That would be WONDERFUL!

I wonder if I am not sleep deprived as well - having so many so close, trying to do it all. Something may have to change. Thanks for your input.

Hi ,
I think getting up earlier is a good plan. I feel for myself i can achiche so much more that way. I feel more productive.

But you do need your sleep is for sure. Going to bed ealier should help for that, or naps. I try to get the kids in bed by 9:00, aleast the boys, Sarah my 3 yr. old and Anna my 6 mon. tend to be up till 10:00 somtimes. So i go to bed then. I would love to go to bed ealier like 9:00. Hopefully i will have the girls trained to go to bed with the boys soon. But since Sarah naps she is not tried till late.

Well wishing you a wonderful birth, and healthy new baby!!
Can't wait to hear the big news!!
