My new table
This was the table my dad made for my mom when we lived in the Yukon Territory. I remember us sitting 10 to 12 people at this table for Christmas dinners and birthday parties. I had my mom measure the table open to its fullest (two leaves) and it measures just over 7 feet. Right now we are only using one leaf.
Thanks to my brother who brought us the table and chairs (and many other boxes) to our home from Mom and Dad’s.
The reason I have received this great gift is because my parents are moving to Rwanda to do missions work there. They have sold their home and most of their possessions.

Tax Time Spoilings
We got our tax return back this week and Jason took us to town to get a few things.
Kristyn got hair dye.
Jason and I got a Keurig coffee pot. I think it’s mine though. I love it. It’s kinda like this one.
If getting those runners I wanted didn’t require going to the city I probably would have gotten those too.
Jason got a lathe that happened to be on sale at Canadian Tire.
The other kids just got odds and ends of stuff. lol.
We’re gonna go price shingles and floor – so that we can start on the new kitchen soon.

Nine Plus Nine
I have slowly been coming to a realization. After 7 pregnancies. Adjusting to a new baby takes a long time.
An expectant mother is expecting for approximately 9 months. Her body goes through many many changes – hormonal, emotional, physical, relational, and more.
And then there is the labor and delivery. More changes.
The baby arrives and the family changes. Mom’s body needs to recover from the pregnancy changes; there are many post-partum issues that can possibly arise as well.
I never made a connection until the last couple of pregnancies that on average, in my experience, it takes 9 months to make a baby, and 9 months to adjust to that baby after it arrives. That’s a year and a half of “upheaval” in the life of a family. The first four pregnancies I experienced were really a blur. Kristyn and Cora came very close together with Kristyn being only a year old when Cora arrived. Cora was just barely 8 months old when Harvey was conceived. And then the years of grief after his death shadowed Marrissa’s birth.
By the time Wyatt was on the way, I was beginning to realize that I needed to give myself time to rest and recover after the birth of a baby. I remember hardly moving off the couch for the first week or so, after Wyatt’s birth. After Rayna, I stayed on the couch a little longer. After Matthias, I spent most of the first 6 weeks on the couch! I am better for it, I know.
Matthias is now almost 8 months old. I feel my old self coming back. I have energy again. I am keeping up better with the house work. I can’t wait for spring to go walking again. I am baking bread and looking forward to gardening with Jason and putting that produce away for our family to use come next winter.
Yesterday, I made six loaves of bread, kept the dishes caught up, did 5 or 6 loads of laundry, made meals, bathed children, swept up, sorted and folded clean laundry, took the dog out to do his business. A lot of this is regular day to day stuff and needs to be done regardless of how tired I am. Until recently, some of these things went undone for days.
I am excited to, one, make the connection, and two, be back to myself again!
I guess my message to new and expectant moms is give yourselves a break! And 18 month break. Live in the season that is this new baby. Love on your baby. Allow the siblings to love on the baby. If you homeschool, relax. Your children will learn and there is nothing better than learning to be a family! There is time for all the other stuff later.

Random Family Stuff
- Kristyn had a tooth pulled and a spacer put in.
- Kristyn’s spacer fell out.
- New coloring books are fun for everyone, especially if they have sticker in them!
- I stepped on Kristyn’s foot while we were on the stairs and twisted my ankle and knee badly.
- Marrissa’s hair is almost to her waist.
- I love having meals in my freezer; making supper is a breeze.
- In the last week, we’ve watched / listened to “Series of Unfortunate Events” movie too many times to count.
- My girls have taken to running with Doc with a long yellow rope tied to one of them and the other end to tied to Doc.
- I’m ready for the snow to be gone.
- I don’t like wet dog smell; I think my dog needs a bath.
- Dog Whisperer is one twice a day during the week. I have it programmed. We watch it almost every day.
- I love it when Matthias sleeps through all the noise his siblings create!
- I don’t like when I waste time while he’s sleeping through all the noise.
- I love buying books; I just need to get better at reading them in a timely manner.
- Coffee is my beverage of choice.
- I need to drink more water.
- My dog helps to keep my floor clean; it is one of the reasons we decided to get a dog.
- I have hired a cleaning person; we are just waiting for some details at J’s work to be figured out, then she will start.
- In order for the details to be figured out, I have paper work to do. I guess I should get on that job.
- I don’t know that I have a 20th item, but it seemed weird to leave it at 19 items. hee hee

Life Around Here
This week was a great week. Jason was home a number of days, and then worked a few nights which meant he slept some of the days. He finished my floor! I gained almost a whole room of space in my living room.
Monday was National Sticky Bun Day. So, thanks for the donations of a friend and neighbor we were able to make yummy buns for night snack.
My student had his last week here; we saw him three days so we could try to get the unit finished before he moved to his new community and new school. We got it done! I’m sad to see them go, but so glad for the good change for their family. At least I trust that it will be a good move for them. I really enjoyed tutoring; I would take on another student in the future, I think, if the opportunity presents itself.
I had good visits with my friends. One day was worship and fitness focussed; we worked out to praise and worship music. What a blast! The other day was just a visit; we had good food and good conversation while our children played. Then there were the phone conversations had with yet another friend; our lives are so crazy busy that we haven’t made the time to get together, but we are still making a point to be in one another’s life.
What are we learning about? I haven’t really been talking much about school lately. We’re counting coins! We are playing. Books everywhere, all the time. Wii sports. Music. Dance. Computer skills. We’ve learned about interacting with others. We talked about some current news. We are learning a number of life skills.
March is here already. Soon the first quarter of the year will be gone and we will wonder where the time was spent. We will marvel that the year is flying past. And before you know it spring will arrive. What fun! Spring!!!

You KNOW What I’m Talking About
You know those zits. The ones that build and build and build. . . deep under the skin. The ones where you know it’s there but it won’t come to a head. So you pick at it. And it scabs over and you pick it again. All the while the pressure is building more and more.
The crease of your nose or that spot in the corner of your mouth is so taut that you are sure it will explode at any moment. Every time you bump your nose or go to wipe it after a sneeze, your eyes water.
Yeah, in the last two weeks I’ve had two of these monsters, both on my nose!
The first one I squeezed and pushed. I finally had to physically pull the stuff out! And my eyes watered! Then last night, the other one was more than I could bare any longer. With tears streaming down my face, I squeeze for all I was worth, all I could handle.
I thought my head had exploded. But no, the zit had hit the mirror!
Unfortunately, it hasn’t completed its course and continues to be a pain in my nose.
But I am one teary squeeze closer.

My Toe and Other Randomness
Remember my sore toe post? Well, I never realized how often my children or the puppy step on or bang into my feet! I have taken to wearing my steel toed, winter work boots in the house!
Usually I wear runners, but I think my runners may be causing my ingrown toe nail issue. At the very least, the runners are not helping. I am thinking that maybe they are too narrow at the toe. I will be keeping that in mind when I get a new pair. My work boots are very roomy and my toe is very safe under the steel.
Marrissa has learned to build walls with the large Lego. She learned to not join the seams and her wall is no very strong! She is so excited.
Matty has been enjoying a very little bit of table food. I’ve just been feeding him a bit of soup from my plate, a crust of bread in the exersaucer or a bit of oatmeal and milk. He likes food! But sometimes only Momma’s milk will do.
We’ve gotten our schedule shifted. Not sure if I’ve recently mentioned this. I was getting really good at getting up at 6:30AM. The kids were getting up around 8 and we were able to start school very close to 9AM. Now I find myself turning off the alarm AFTER hitting snooze multiple times. I wake in a panic at 8 trying to figure out a way to get everything done that I want done before the kids wake. However, because they are getting up later, I need to loose the panic and just carry on with the day. The only days this doesn’t work are Sunday, Monday and Thursday. So, when is bedtime, you ask? The kids are sleeping between 10 and 11. That is pushing my bedtime to after midnight and close to 1AM. Maybe this is normal???
Wyatt tried going without a diaper at night. That lasted 2 nights. He does not like to wake wet. However, he is 100% day-trained. That achievement happened sometime in the month or so before his 4th birthday. The one thing that is driving me crazy though is he poops in his diaper almost every evening before he goes to sleep! He does not like to go in the toilet.

It's been awhile. . .
We have been so sick this week. I haven't dealt with this much puke in a one week period than when I was pregnant with Matty. That winter Jason started working for the safety company and was gone a lot. I remember having 5 kids sleeping on the living room floor puking in rotation of some sort. This week was a little better than that, but I still have a tonne of laundry! I'm so glad that Jason has taken over doing most of the laundry. He washes and hangs and I fold and put away. There is a pile at both ends of that process.
We got dumped on - snow snow and more snow. And more coming. A couple of the kids got to ride with the neighbor who came by and pushed out our yard. I am so thankful for the help. I can't imagine having to shovel us a path! Usually we just drive and pack it down but too much came at once this time!
Wyatt turned four on Saturday. He is so excited. This morning he woke up and as he came down the stairs he asked, "Mommy, am I still four?" So far he has gotten a Lightening McQueen puzzle and calendar and stickers. This boy loves the Cars movie. We plan to pick him up a dump truck (Tonka) to go with the Tonka loader he got for Christmas. We'll have to get more sand for his sandbox this spring.
I had really wanted to get going on "sit-down" school this week, but with everyone being as sick as we were, I'm impressed with what we did get done. Each of the older girls did a few pages of math and the younger kids touched on the letter H again. Although I don't feel H is covered I'm going to move on to J this coming week. (We did the letter I earlier when we did all the vowels together at the beginning of the year.)
Also on the homeschool front, I have taken on an extra student. Twice a week, we have a 12 year old boy join us to do his math. I am excited about this opportunity and so are the kids. Almost every day I get asked if "S" is coming. The work is not hard, it is just a matter of keeping him focused, answering his questions, checking his work. He takes it to the public school teacher who grades it; it comes back to us for corrections.
We got a Wii for Christmas. We have been having so much fun with it. And since Christmas Day, I have used the Wii Fit Plus every day, except 2, so far - Boxing Day and today. And it's early; I may get to it yet. Besides the Fit Plus, we got Sports and Sports Resort. I have not been able to get Sports to work; the console won't read the disc or something. I still need to contact Nintendo and see what to do about it. The games allow for 4 people to play in a lot of cases, but we've found a way to settle disputes where Rayna is concerned. If we give Rayna one of the remotes that is not needed she thinks she is playing and the game can go on uninterrupted.

Must Haves for a New Baby
Okay, so I just had a new baby a month ago. He’s such a sweetie! I’m not one for a lot of extras for my babies but here’s what I like to have to make life a little easier for me.
- swing – I don’t always turn the swing on. Often we just use the swing as a chair.
- bassinet – baby naps here during the day.
- wrap – I try to carry the baby whenever possible.
- diapers – cloth, disposable or both. I use a mix.
- receiving blankets – lots and lots.
- other flannel blankets – I like to say we can’t have too many blankets.
- clothing, of course – lots of diaper shirts, sleepers, a few pants and shirts outfits for going out.
- car seat – of course. This time around I skipped the carry seat. I want to carry baby myself as much as possible.
Things I’ve never really used more than a time or two (if at all):
- infant bath tub – it’s easier to just bath baby with me or have a sibling in the tub to help.
- monitor – only use this when I can’t be on the same floor as baby.
- co-sleeper – never used this; baby just sleeps with me.
- crib – We used a crib as a co-sleeper with our first two kids. Now I just use a pack n play type bed as a sleeping space as the baby gets older.
- formula and bottles – never used formula. We’ve used bottles or sippy cups when working on weaning.
- infant mittens – we’ve never seen the use for them really; we clip nails.
- hand sanitizer for visitors.
Later in baby’s life I would add the following:
- stroller – for walks, for settling baby sometimes.
- exersaucer – for containing baby to keep them safe or to keep the house safe, or siblings’ projects safe.
- booster / high chair – for meals and play at the table. We use a booster; high chairs take up extra space.
- pack n play / crib – see above note.
- Bumbo – love this for in the kitchen or at the table. This allows baby to be involved with things without being free to roam. This is more of a luxury item than a need, for sure.
This is not exhaustive by any means. What items are on your “must have” list?

A Carrot, An Egg, Coffee Beans

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what you see."
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma the daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its insides became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
Think of this: Which am I?
Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.
The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.
Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Helpful Houshold Hints - FYI
If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. ?
Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil.
It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking. ?
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef.
It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream; then beat them. ?
of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.
Heat leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove; set heat to med-low
and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the food channel and it really works.
Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal; mash till they are all broken up Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy; squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done - easy clean up. ?
Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in
a microwave next to a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food
moist and help it reheat faster. ?
Start putting torn newspaper in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers,
put layers around the plants, overlapping as you go; cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic; they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.
Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose.. Place pin in seam of slacks and ... ta da! ... static is gone.
Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.
Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient (peanut butter, honey, etc.) and watch how easily it comes right out. ?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth! ?
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside,
just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair.
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2 with Apple Cider Vinegar
and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter.. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes.) He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material . I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well.... the hot water just sat (puddled) on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh - that's what burns out the heating unit.
You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your
clothes soft and static free. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box ... well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush ?at least every six months.
He said that increases the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?!
Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share!

Just some randomness
Today is Family Day here in Alberta. We celebrated by having a family over for a turkey dinner. We are seven and they are 6. We had a great evening. I think their older boys got a little bored. However, we did try to include them in our conversation. They cleaned up supper and chatted with the adults.
J worked a full week. He came home very tired and then ended up being called back to work even though he'd booked time off for the weekend. He has been home, though, since late Saturday morning. It has been so nice to have him home for a good chunk of time. We got a lot done on the house - not just clean up. He did some more duct work and laid some lino in the kitchen (a temporary fix that makes it easier for more to clean in there).
Tomorrow he will be not be working either (unless it's in the evening). We are taking the kids to Tammy-Lee's and spending most of the day in a neighboring town. J got a job offer that requires us to think and figure and plan and see if we really want to take it. We will be picking up a few (unrelated) things tomorrow as well as some groceries. I will enjoy tomorrow - spending time with just him. We did a lot of fun stuff this weekend, much of it without the kids, but with other people. So I want to be just with him. I am so thankful for Tammy-Lee's willingness to take all of the children.
Oh, we'd been having some trouble with the bus. A couple of times the engine overheated on the way back from the neighboring town and we had to be picked up by the tow truck and his family's minivan! However, we've now figured out what the problem is. For those of you who know a little about engines and such - it only has three gears and is geared low (does that makes sense? I could be describing it wrong). Going over 100 km an hour (60 mph) is a no-no. It blows the heater hoses off. As long as we putt away down the highway we'll be fine. Oh well, we are on the look out, now, for another motor and transmission (I think) that has more gears. Another issue (now) is that it drinks oil! Every couple of weeks it seems the oil pressure is too low and we have to top it up. I guess the upside of that the oil changes will be far between????

Ya Gotta Wonder . . . .

And, yeah, I'm having a better day. I am chalking yesterday up to being over-tired, J being gone for a week, pregnancy hormones, etc. It's all good.
