Reviewing Our 101 in 1000 List

Well, we have about 90 days left to complete our list.  Hmmm.  Not going to happen.

We have 45 items left.  Some of those are big.  Some of those are outside our control for completion because they are fire courses.  Many of the others we’ve talked about moving forward on and may do so this summer.

  • Hoping to re-shingle the roof this summer.
  • If I can find some herbs, I want to start a herb garden again, in boxes.
  • We are going on picnics this summer.
  • Rabbits for meat and rebuilding the back entrance to make a cold room has been talked about this spring.  Jason already made the door hard to get into; I locked myself out (happens pretty regularly) and I couldn’t break in there anymore.

That’s about where we are at with the list.  I am glad with what we’ve got done.  I wish we had completed the list.  We didn’t though and that’s okay too.

Did you write a 101 Things in 1000 Days list?

Looking at my 101 in 1001 again.

Well, I updated my list.  There are a few more things marked off.  We have a few scheduled to be completed this summer.  We have just under 400 days left.

I’m not overly pleased with how much we’ve accomplished, but we are making progress and I guess that’s what is important.  I really like having ht list to refer to from time to time to give a little more direction.

Re-thinking Our 101 Things in 1001 Days

We have about 500 days left in our 1001 Days to complete the 101 list of things.  We are half done, but that's still a lot of days.  However, as I was reviewing the list, many of the things are irrelevant now.  Life changes so much in the course of 1001 days.  I'm not going to totally scrap this list as many of the goals are still reachable and still important, but it has really caused me to think about that length of time.   Do I revise the list?  I'm not sure that would be a good idea - kinda defeats the purpose of that plan.  So I've cleaned up the list (took all the notes out) and am going to re-post it on the 101/1001 link on the right side bar.  I found the notes to be confusing.  I will simply BOLD the times that are completed to MY/OUR satisfaction.  After all, it is our list and we can deem what is completed and what is not.

Oh my the busy-ness of fall!

My blogs (SSDR and this one) have been neglected! I have most of September in One Year to an Organized Life to read and discuss. I have my 101/1001 to update. I have another book review coming for here as well. I have to discuss my monthly focus for September and decide on one for October. Over at SSDR I have a number of Breast Cancer Awareness posts to take care of as well as working on some other reviews for there.

We are working into a new normal in our house. With regular scheduled activities regularly happening things are falling into place. And with DH gone for most of the day every day we are changing the routine here at home too. Trying to find what's going to work for us to get everything done - activities, homeschooling, groceries, chores, visits with friends.

One of my focuses here this month is going to be planning the birthday party for the end of the month. I'm still planning on going with the Dr. Seuss theme and have some ideas brewing. I'll share them as I get to them! We have three birthday girls; I want to make each feel special so even though it's a group party there needs to be some individualization as well.

Updating My 101 List

What follows are the highlights of progress made on my 101 list. Check out this post for the whole list and more updates.

Start the kitchen renovation. (5) Well, although this is not started, nor completed, the thinking process has started. We’ve been debating and thinking about what to spend our income tax return on. I need to have some dental work done and I need new glasses. So that was our first thought. Now, though, the more we think about having a kitchen on the main floor, the more we are leaning toward that decision. And then there is always my student loans that need to be paid off. I guess there is always a place for the money to go.

Savings. (8-13) Due to DH’s job situation we’ve used up most (there’s less than 100$ there now) of our savings and we have been unable to add anything to that. L We are sad about that, but there is really nothing we can do at this point.

Walk three times a week. (14) Spring is here!! And we are getting out walking more often. I bet within a week or so we’ll be up to three times a week.

Write snail mail letters weekly. (22) I wouldn’t say that I’ve modified this one but rather as a step in the right direction I have started buying all the birthday and anniversary cards for the month at the beginning of the month. Then I send them all at once. So sometimes the birthdays at the beginning are a little late but the ones at the end are there in lots of time.

Read an adult book a week. (15) See this post to see what my reading list consists of for the spring. Also look at the bookshelf on my sidebar for other books I want to / plan to read. I will be adding things there (the bookshelf) as I find more I am interested in.

Get the wood furnace in working order by winter 2009. (37) We have had an initial inspection done on the installation of the furnace. There are a few things to be modified and completed, then a second or follow-up inspection. By next winter we should be able to use the furnace to supplement our natural gas unit.

Bible reading (40) I am sad to say that the progress I was making on this has come to a complete halt.

TV time (41) See above note. The same applies here.

Clean out front porch area. (81) We did this!!! We moved the fridge to clear an area for DH’s woodworking area. We are one step closer to getting that kitchen area in place!!!

Build or obtain shelving for the basement. (86) WOOHOO! I have started filling and organizing my shelving that has been built in the basement!!!

An Update On My 101 / 1001

26. Learn to crochet. Last week a lady we call Grandma Irene and her friend (and ours) Jean-Anne came by for a visit. Grandma Irene babysat and folded laundry while Jean-Anne reintroduced me to crocheting. The older three girls wanted to learn too, but M doesn't have the fine motor skills, and it's just not K's thing, but CJ picked it up right away (at least the chaining part). The plan now is for me to finish a blanket I started in 2004. I want to purchase some beginning sewing items too - lacing cards for W and M, spool knitters for K and CJ and a couple of larger crochet hooks for them to get more practice. Although I never learned young, I think it is an important skill and hobby to have.

33. Have "coffee" with a friend twice a month.

38. Schedule yearly dentist appointments for the family. I called and set up appointments for the children. Under a government program the children are fully covered for dental work. DH and I will have to wait to have dentist appointments until he has fully time, long term employment.

70. Learn to use power tools to make things for our home such as decorations. We bought me my own drill, and I’ve used it.

Cut TV time for children to two hours of their programming a day. – I’m working on this too; they still watch too much, but we are more selective of what they watch. (01/29/09)

43.
Start making my own yogurt. – I found a great recipe for doing this in my crockpot. I have yet to try it. (01/29/09)

67. Set up our homeschool area. This will have to be done after the lofts are done. – Homeschool area has just recently been moved to the stage. This is working. Just have to get it more organized now. (01/29/09)

80. Completely deal with current work issue. – This current work issue (current at the time of writing the list) has been dealt with COMPLETELY!!! (01/29/09)

Monthly Review of 101 in 1001 Days list.

I've updated the original post as well.

1. The loft is started!

4. The regular home school routine is starting this week. We are starting with Letter of the Week again.

8. Well, we had decided to gradually increase our savings every three months, but have since decided to jump right in and take 200 off the top! It’s in there and we’ll adjust as needed. So if that continues, we’ve covered 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13!!! WOOHOO!!!

15. I’m reading and listening to adult books!! Not through one a week yet, but I’m at least doing it and that’s what counts. Still would like to get to one a week.

16. I was reading to the kids; I had started with a book a night and I stopped! I’m very disappointed about that, but I’m going to try again.

20. Windows are insulated. (Not sure if I mentioned this one before.)

22. I’m not writing snail mail letters weekly, yet, but I’ve written more snail mail letters since starting this list than I had written in the previous three or four years.

24. I am turning the computer off or staying away from it more. It is not all consuming anymore.

25. We are slowly getting rid of “garbage toys” and that is helping with storage. Also we have been blessed with some dressers and desks for the kids. So that is definitely helping with stuffy and clothing storage!

32. Drinking more water and Gatorade and stuff like that. Not up to what I want to drink, but getting there.

36. Shower has a curtain.

37. We decided to sell the wood furnace as it doesn’t seem like it will meet our needs.

40. I got a mp3 player for Christmas and I put the New Testament on it. I’ve been listening to that while I’ve been doing my morning routine.

41. TV time gets cut this week! I’m so sick of it.

42. I’ve got more glass and stainless steel bowls. They were given to me! So excited about that.

47. R’s birth story was written shortly after she was born.

50. I have the 29th marked on my calendar with a Flylady sticker as a reminder. Not sure what I’m going to do as a mini-celebration, but it’s marked for the whole year.

54. Haven’t started it yet, but I’ve been thinking about starting my belly dancing video.

92. Jason took the fire course S-300.

Well, we’re only 2 months into this project. Only two months in and we’ve started or finished at least 19 things (there were a few I didn’t mention that we’ve started) and more that are in the plans for the next couple of weeks. I’m very excited about this!

So I figured out that in order to complete all 101 things on the list, you have to complete three of them a month. So I’m WAY ahead of schedule! hee hee And that’s great because I know there will be some months when we won’t do any.

Some random thoughts

Well, we've had quite the Christmas season. We've been so sick. Terribly sick. Every single one of us. Well, except for baby who just slept lots and lots.

We were together though and that's what counts. Although DH was on call he didn't get any calls into work. This was totally different from last here when DH was called out every day but one through the whole 10 days. He was able to work on our loft (even if he didn't get as far as he wanted, he got a start) and I'm so excited about that. (Look for pictures soon.)

Now we've started a new year! Do you have resolutions? I didn't really make any specific but I will be working on my 101 in 1001 list - see my post from yesterday about the habit per month.

Off to get lunch for everyone now. K cooked burgers! She's really getting very independent and I love it. She's a huge help to me.

Oh, and my pic for Photo Wednesday - look for more of those. I think I found my hobby. Scrapbooking without the mess!!! I worked on a bunch of pages last night and brought in the new year that way! : )

Habit for the Month Combined with 101 in 1001 List

I recently subscribed to Simple Mom's feed via email and have really been enjoying her posts. The one I read a week ago was particularly motivating. At least my thoughts have been going nuts since and I've read other posts (here and here) linked in her "morning routine" post and developing a project of sorts for the next year. Each month I plan to pick a habit to focus on to develop and maintain. I hope to take items from my 101 in 1001 list. I have considered listing the 12 habits - one for each month - but I don't want to choose them all today. I want to choose them, based on need, as each month comes.

I have decided on January's habit; I want to start getting up early again. While pregnant with Baby R, I had started getting up before DH and the family. I would get dressed and start coffee, read my Bible and just have some time for me, before the day started. We instituted the rule that the children had to stay in bed until I got them up. Being that DH is not a morning person, we find the morning runs much smoother if he has very few distractions! Children up and about and asking for things - breakfast, TV, candy, etc - is just too much.

So, my plan for January is to start getting up before everyone again. I'd like to aim for 7 AM at the latest, but Baby R has been getting up around 6 AM for a feeding, so I may go with that time - whatever her morning feeding is each day. Time will tell. If the feeding is at 5, it won't happen! In addition to getting up early, I want to institute a morning routine. (Items in bold are in my current morning routine.)

  • get dressed to shoes including hair and face
  • swish and swipe the bathroom
  • start the computer
  • start the coffee
  • start the washer
  • read/study Bible
I think this is very do-able. I have done this routine before and I used to love getting up early. It was only due to being so tired at the end of my pregnancy and recovery that I have been sleeping in. I have a vicious circle that I am living in - late to bed, late to rise, day starts later, nap time runs into supper time equaling a later bedtime again. I feel like I'm getting nothing done and am getting further behind. One item on my 101 list is to have a regular routine to our day. I thought programming the children was the way to go, but now I am realizing that I need to get myself in order first and they will follow my lead.

101 in 1001 Review

Click here for the complete list.

#8. This morning I transferred $10 to savings. The first of three times I'd like to do this.

#20 is complete. We made curtains from heavy blankets. The finished project looks great!

#36 is done. We have a curtain around the tub so that the water stays off the floor. All that's left to do is trim the curtains because they are too long and lay on the bottom of the tub.

#47 is done. R's birth story is written and posted!

For day 4 of 1001, I'm doing pretty good to have these things completed/started. I have updated the original post as well.

101 Things To Do In 1001 Days - a trend and a project

Well, there seems to be something brewing. More and more I see sites linking to Day Zero or some form of this concept. DH and I have decided to tackle the following list. I've picked a start date of November 1, 2008 because that's easy and I didn't know when I'd get done writing the list. It took a while! So that makes our end date to be Saturday, July 30, 2011.

A lot of it is big projects - things I can't do on my own, some are to do with the kids, some are travel. I'll post the list and report back on it, just like I do with our homeschooling curriculum list. This could get quite lengthy as I plan to explain some of the items as a reminder to me why. Last updated March 31, 2009.

101 Things To Do In 1001 days

1. Start and finish bedroom loft. – Although not 100% complete, it is to a point where we can be in it and love it. We’ll work on the bits and pieces that are left – some electrical, flooring, a permanent railing. (01/29/09)

2. Raise rabbits for meat.

3. Start a worm composting box.

4. Maintain a regular home school schedule – we are starting this by starting a routine for the household. This is going well, most days. The children are loving it. (01/29/09)

5. Start the kitchen renovation. – (03/2009 Starting to think this process through. May use income tax return for this.)

6. Rebuild front deck.

7. Re-shingle front portion of the roof.

8. Place $10/month into savings account for first three months. NOV DEC JAN

9. Place $20/month into savings account for months 4-6. FEB MAR APR

12. Place $50/month into savings account for months 13-15. NOV DEC JAN

13. Maintain placing $50/month into savings account.

14. Walk three times a week. – I'm working on this; up to two times a week. (Dec) It got cold again. We're not working on this anymore, right now. (01/29/09) (03/2009) Spring is coming and we are getting out more.

15. Read an adult book a week. – 02/2009 - I'm not getting through a whole book each week, but I am reading a little each day. (03/2009) I’ve been reading more and have even started a reading list for the spring.

16. Read to the kids daily for half an hour. We are starting with one book each evening for bed. (Dec. 08) This has kinda fallen by the wayside again. (01/29/09)

17. Modify the suburban. J needs a vehicle to work like a truck. We have this and it's paid for. We'll make it work.

18. Work on riding lawn mowers to get at least one working for spring 2009.

19. Work on getting utility trailer licensed.

20. Insulate the windows in the sanctuary. Keep the cold out and the heat in, in the winter and vise versa in the summer. We are going to make curtains - roman blinds type things from heavy blankets. DONE

21. Grow and maintain a herb garden.

22. Write snail mail letters weekly. (03/209 – Working on this, sending bday and ann cards monthly)

23. Learn, use and teach more sign language to the children. – part of our Letter of the Week curriculum is to learn to sign the alphabet. (01/29/09)

24. Turn computer off by 4 PM 3 nights a week. – I'm not yet turning it off but I am walking away and not coming back from 4 until sometime after 7 PM. (Dec. 08) I’m working on this by just staying away more over all and especially during bedtime. (01/29/09)

25. Organize toy storage.

26. Learn to crochet. (02/2009)

27. Start sewing - a project a month.

28. Become more actively involved in local politics. (Needs defining. What do we want to do?)

29. Visit seniors' home twice a month.

30. Have guests from church or the community over for a meal once a month. – This is going well. We had company a few times this month! (01/29/09) (03/2009 – this continues to go well. We have people over quite regularly.)

31. Blog about our homeschooling weekly (or more). – This is getting more regular too, as I report with pictures what we do each week. (01/29/09) (03/2009 – this too is going well.)

32. Drink half my weight in ounces of non-diuretic liquid daily. (2/2009) I am drinking less coffee and have upped my water, not quite up to half.

33. Have "coffee" with a friend twice a month. (Dec 08) (02/2009)

34. Give monthly to the food bank. (Dec08)

35. Put in a main floor bathroom.

36. Put a shower curtain up around the tub.

37. Get the wood furnace in working order by winter 2009. (03/2009 – we have had an inspection done. Just a few things that need to be done before it can be approved.)

38. Schedule yearly dental check ups for the family. (02/2009 appointments scheduled for the children)

39. Schedule yearly optometrist check ups for the family.

40. Read or listen to the Bible daily. – I added this to my morning routine. (01/29/09) (03/2009 – this is not going well.)

41. Cut TV time for children to two hours of their programming a day. I try to leave the TV off. I want them to have no more than two hours but would certainly rather less. However, the TV is J's thing to do to relax, so if the children are still awake in the evening when it is on I'm not going to fight the battle to keep them away from their dad while he's watching TV and interacting with them at that time. Getting closer, most days. For a while there, after R was born they were watching a lot, but we're cutting back again. Now, they are watching more wholesome programs - DVDs from our collection - and TV. (Dec. 08) I’m working on this too; they still watch too much, but we are more selective of what they watch. (01/29/09) (03/2009 – this is not going really well either.)

42. Actively move away from plastics to glass or stainless steel. With all the scare of stuff in plastics, this feels safer to me. I haven't done a tonne of research but I want to get away from them anyway and also get away from using the microwave. So that's kinda a two in one here.

43. Start making my own yogurt. This means I need to get a yogurt maker or go WAY out on a limb and try it without! Scary thought. I found a great recipe for doing this in my crock pot. I have yet to try it. (01/29/09)

44. Start growing our own tobacco. I know, I know, smoking is terrible but without all the pesticides and sprays it should be healthier. Plus it's homeschooling for the kids!

45. Find a small whole Bible to carry with me like I do my cell phone. I read a blog somewhere that this woman was challenged or challenged herself to do with her Bible as she does for her cellphone. So if she forgot her Bible she'd go home for it because that's what she would do if she'd left her cellphone. Or if she turns her cell on first thing in the morning, to read her Bible then too. Our society has become so dependent on technology and we need to get away from that a little and get back into God's Word and be dependent on that instead! I never saved the blog and I don't know how she did, but I'm going to give it a shot.

46. Write M's birth story.

47. Write baby #6 birth story.

48. Learn to quilt. This will be a winter project.

49. At least once, go away overnight without the kids, just for us.

50. Make each 29th of the month special as a reminder of our wedding anniversary.

51. Clear out brush and trees.

52. Build a sandbox.

65. Organize and figure out good storage for craft supplies.

66. Organize homeschool books and supplies better.

67. Set up our homeschool area. This will have to be done after the lofts are done. – Homeschool area has just recently been moved to the stage. This is working. Just have to get it more organized now. (01/29/09) (03/2009 – this got more organized.)

68. Re-write master/monthly grocery list.
